Alma is a music industry singer, songwriter, and arranger from New York based in Rio de Janeiro since 2004. Known for having a clean and flexible range Alma is one of the most prominent voices in Brazilian jazz, on TV and movie soundtracks today. This since her unique participation on The Voice Brazil in 2012 as the only foreigner to reach the semi-finals to singing exclusively Brazilian music in the national language Portuguese and in 2020 Alma was the winner of The Four Brazil on Record TV.
The "Alma Thomas Group" is a main stay at festivals throughout Brazil from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte, Braslia, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande Do Sul, Curitiba, Maranho, Piau, Belm, Salvador, and So Paulo with inumerous sold out shows at the Blue Note Brazil since its inception in Latin America. Alma dedicates herself to different multicultural repertoires respecting many jazz languages blues, Bossa nova, Samba, Samba Jazz, MPB (Brazilian popular music) and popular music of varying styles from all over the world.
In 2015 Alma released her singing method "Organic Popular Singing" amplifying the need for amplifying the need for more actual didactic materials with styles like vocal improvisation, modern techniques for recording voice, interpretation of Brazilian jazz styles and the performing realities of the modern day singer in Brazil's native tongue Portuguese.
Currently Alma is a judge on the Enemol Sunshine North America's Brazilian version of "Altogether Now" ("Canta Comigo") on Record TV also available on Netflix.
Alma Thomas Activism in Brazil:
Alma Thomas has long been an open and transparent voice on stage during her shows about the black experience in the Americas. Something that came naturally to her because of her own family tragedies within the black American experience, and because of the rampant racism she felt and saw in her day to day life in Brazil.
As a North American, living in South America, that conversation since 2004 has grown considerably in Brazil. Transcending much of what was thought to just be a movement to push products, of negritude like hair products and finally make up that covered the actual face of Brasil, but a push back in the musical community as well.
These interventions crossed many musical styles from afro futurism, to the encorporation of candomble rhythms and African pop music mixed into an already intense and internationally famous Brazilian esthetic that usually ignored this influence and tradition entwined in a deep afro diaspora within Brazil.
As someone versed in multicultural rythmic styles Alma's adventure was no longer a lonely adventure but one that included shows dedicated to the memory and civil rights influence of Nina Simone and for the last 6 years presenting a show in homage to her legacy in more than 8 Brazilian capitals.
Everytime time weaving her own life story, as a now pan American African woman, using the fascination and power of influence of Nina Simone as a way for the elite musical public to take a look around and see who's actually there in the audience. Why are there not more black people here? and how are we to help in increasing their delight in being in spaces otherwise deemed artistically elitist.
